Kids’ Style: Checkered Prints

By Samantha Jong
March 7, 2017

Sometimes all that’s needed to add a bit of personality into an outfit is a dash of checkered prints. It has both preppy and punk connotations and the design element has been making its way into the wardrobes of mini fashionistas everywhere. And did you know that not all checkered patterns are made equal — there are nine different basic patterns.

The easiest way for your mini to pull off checks is to throw a checkered shirt over a white t-shirt. This look works best with jeans and sneakers, and your little one can button up if it gets too chilly.

Checkered shirts are the easiest way to achieve a preppy look. Button it up all the way to the top and pair it tucked in with an unzipped bomber jacket or throw on a cardigan and your mini will be ready for a nice dinner out in town. Pick a shirt with an oxford collar for a smarter, more polished look!

Like the layered look? The checkered shirt is perfect. Layer it under a solid-coloured vest and complete the outfit with leggings. The mix of layers and textures is another way to play the preppy card.

It’s not just about shirts when it comes to checkered prints. They look great on a dress too, and adds a punky edge to an otherwise feminine look.

If a whole shirt filled with checks is too much for you, add a dash of it into your little ones outfits in the form of a bib. However, one other item will have to be solid coloured because unless you have the eye for it, prints on prints can be a tricky combination to manage.
